Caught [Fic]
Nov. 16th, 2014 11:43 pmThe floating reef has taken over one of the few big empty spaces left in the building. There are armed security guards at the two entrances during the day. Full lock down during the nights. It's costing more money than she could justify to a board if they didn't trust her implicitly. That trust is a stranger thing in her world than the floating ecosystem that just started appearing one day. They have no reason to believe other than a reputation she doesn't believe anymore herself. Yet they both exist.
Elenore is currently the only person in the building with the clearance to enter the room alone. There are, of course, the necessary cleaning staff and individuals who supplement the feeding of the animals. They are simply required to enter groups of no less than two and no more than four. It protects them from the few predators who've proven themselves to be dangerous, and helps prevent any possible theft. Elenore only walks it alone.
She believes that the entire reef reacts to her presence, and doesn't particularly want to know if they respond the same way to any new person. The turtle swims a slow orbit around her. The small clouds of brilliant fish weave clouds around her that every bit of diving training tells her is very dangerous. The sharp toothed predators might catch on her while seeking the smaller creatures. She pets a few of their quivering feathered bodies anyway. The reward is worth it just as the way the small octopi that climb floating plants and coral like monkeys in trees are. It's wrong and it's beautiful in the wrongness.
Everything about it says it was built for her. Someone who doesn't mind screwing around with extreme genetic manipulation and forced growth rates and probably a nice handful of mutagens. All dangerous and potentially illegal things that open the other person up to risk to bring to light. Which isn't even touching the sheer cost of the endeavor. Which means someone wants her attention at great potential cost. Or they want to hurt her. Or trap her. Something that had to predate her company unless someone pushed things harder than any kind of sense would allow.
Common sense says to leave it alone. Sell off the property individually and in lots. It would be sure to make more money back than she's spent on keeping them. Unreasonably large amounts given the names of a few collectors and the chance to sell them at a closed auction. The board would be delighted, especially since she's discovered a number of things from them already. Just simple observation, of course. Anything deeper might start to trigger something. But they hint at a treasure trove she thinks about tapping into at least once a day when she walks through the clouds of color floating creatures.
She realizes she misses the questions. Her own curiosity seems to have curled up and died except for this possible Trojan horse and a few other personal matters. They remind her of what it feels like to go forward on something more than momentum and obligation. The emotions that are there aren't tainted. The possible betrayal is a thrill again. Which leaves her wary. There have been too many months of not trusting herself to do anything but try to wait out the paralysis.
