The marriage ceremony is to be in a church, something Elenore finds deeply ironic considering she believes that neither of them are people of faith. One look at his face as he steps in the building corrects her assumption. Alexander believes in this God and this faith, and when she considers what he does for a living, she isn't sure what to think of it. Every day, every death would be a mark against his soul, and that doesn't even bring up the fact he never goes to services himself or talk about her converting. It gnaws at her.

He corrects her gently when she calls it a church on the phone to her mother. It's a Cathedral with a capitol 'C,' and the woman on the other end of the line is more than a little amused by it. Elenore who has never cared enough about religion to ever form an opinion about it married in front of icons with gold leaf by men strange hats and crowns. Of course both she and Elenore's father would come. To do anything else would be unthinkable. Her daughter imagines she hears the implication that it would be too good of a show to miss. Alexander spends more than an hour working the knots out of her shoulders.

Both her older brother and younger sister agree to come with similar notes of amusement. Given what they know of her and her history, the idea of an actual marriage with someone she hasn't been with for years, she attempts to forgive them. It is not her most successful endeavor, but the thought of her young nephew as a ring bearer in a ceremony that will be to some degree alien to her helps balance her out. It repeats her in her mind as they go through the various hoops even the amount of money Alexander is willing to sink into a church that so loves its ornamentation can buy their way out of.

When she is not being baptized in a literal sense, she is baptized in the fires of being a part of his life. There never ending social events wear parts of her down, but she walks away with a greater skill each time. His apparently effortless ease with the world is never anything she'll achieve, but she finds being pushed to learn these not quite alien skills in the brutal environment the best kind of learning environment. There might be a plateau in how much of her world he understands, but she's only beginning her own rise.

He plans the ceremony. It is, after all, his business. The more complicated it gets, the less she cares. Nothing about it is an act of love beyond the fact that she's making every concession. Which isn't love, exactly, so much as indifference. Marriage is another step that adds stability but little else to the equation. The emotional element is vaguely disappointing in its lack, feeding her focus on restructuring her business. That is a never ending challenge.

It's probably wrong that I highly anticipate the wedding. Oh, 'Nore. One of my favourite characters. <3

The twists and turns you take Elenore through remain utterly fascinating and continue to evoke the 'I'm not worthy' response.
